Summer isn’t technically here but it is in our house! My daughter is done with school, our pool is open and we’re spending lots of time outside. We’re also eating more snacks because I guess that’s just a summer rite of passage. I like to keep my kids from eating crackers and cookies 24/7 so we rely on a lot of fruit over the summer. Pineapple is great because it’s sweet, juicy and the kids lover it. However, it can be intimidating! So today I’m going to show you how to cut pineapple so you can enjoy it all summer.
Video of How to Cut Pineapple
The easiest way to show you how to cut a pineapple is to actually show you how to cut a pineapple. So check out the 3-minute video where I walk you through how I do it.
Steps of Cutting a Pineapple
- ▪ Sharpen your knife. It’s easy to do with a basic knife sharpener and it will make cutting your pineapple so much easier.
- ▪ Make sure your cutting board is secure. Place a piece of shelf liner underneath it so it doesn’t move.
- ▪ Lay the pineapple down flat on your cutting board and carefully cut the top and bottom off.
- ▪ Then move your pineapple to an upright position and carefully cut the skin off, one column at a time. This is a skill that gets better as you practice it so don’t worry if you aren’t perfect at it right out the gate.
- ▪ Now go back an cut any skin remnants off. Sometimes the eyes get left on and I have to go back and get them.
- ▪ Next you have to cut out the core. I like to cut off two parallel sides first and then the other sides. Then I cut those pieces into chunks.
- ▪ Store in a storage container in your fridge for up to a week. Or freeze for up to 6 months.
Tips for How to Cut a Pineapple
- ▪ Your pineapple will be the sweetest when it’s ripe. Once it’s a golden color (as opposed to green) and has a sweet scent it will be good to go. I typically cut it 3-5 days after buying it.
- ▪ If you freeze you pineapple, lay in in a single layer on a baking sheet om parchment paper and freeze for one hour until hard. Then transfer to a storage container. Otherwise it will all stick together in the freezer.
- ▪ I love adding pineapple to my green smoothies, check out my favorite recipe below.
