We’ve all been there before. You’re in your groove with something new; exercising, waking up early or meal planning and your house gets hit with the stomach flu, or sinus infections or strep throat! Just as you were beginning to make progress on a goal, it gets derailed and it can make you feel like nothing is ever going to work out. Meal planning during a sick week needs a little bit of preparation.
Well don’t fret! One little illness (or three in a row) is not going to get the best of you. When it comes to meal planning get off schedule due to sickness befalling your house, I have 3 super useful tips you can utilize. Give them a try and let me know what you think!
Saving Food You Just Bought
Last week I did my grocery shopping in Sunday and then fell ill with the flu on Monday. I was literally out of commission for 3 full days and then only able to do small tasks for the rest of the week. My husband took time off to take care of the girls and he did his best to keep things running like normal but he wasn’t about to cook the dinners I planned on top of everything else he was taking care of.
So what did we do? We froze what we could: meats, seafood, bread products. The dinner veggies that I didn’t think would hold until next week got turned into a big vegetable soup when I was feeling better. The rest of the items were able to be used up this week so I just revised my meal plan. Overall, there wasn’t much waste thrown out!
Getting Groceries Without Leaving Home
Luckily, I had just gotten my groceries delivered on Sunday so we didn’t really need to run out to the store for anything other than medicine. (Which my husband did because we also got hit with the polar vortex the same week!) If you end up getting sick this winter, before you’re able to go grocery shopping, I highly recommend you use a grocery delivery service like Instacart.
Not only will your groceries be delivered right to your door, in a matter of hours, but you’ll actually save money by grocery shopping this way. I swear by it and I am a cheap lady:) So bite the bullet and give it a try next time you can’t get to the store. Get all the chicken noodle soup and NyQuil you need.
Meal Planning for the Healthy Family Members
My husband, by the grace of God, did NOT get sick. So he either already had this one or the universe took it easy on us because they knew we’d be royally screwed if he fell ill too. Both my girls were sick but not as bad as I was so my husband still had to make them regular meals.
What did they eat? Freezer Section Freezer Meals. I talk a lot about Freezer Section Freezer Meals in my workshops on and on my Live videos because they are an integral part of my meal planning process. I’m not superwoman and I don’t play one on t.v. I need some easy wins when it comes to dinnertime that aren’t take-out. That’s where FSFM come in. As basic as a frozen pizza, to more complex options like my Ravioli Lasagna, they all serve the same purpose. They feed my family quick from freezer and pantry staples. I like to keep a few options on hand at all times for emergencies, like when I get hit with the flu. So while I was sick and unable to cook, my husband made pizza, garlic chicken pasta and soup.
So there you have it, some easy to tips to keep on hand in case you or your family get a bug this winter! (Or anytime really!) If you guys have any tips you utilize for sick weeks, I’d love to hear them in the comments.

Great tips Taran! They come at the perfect time with this season of illness. I really wish there were more Keto-friendly frozen food options, but your ideas always help spark inspiration for me.
