Creating a personal oasis in my home has been vital to my overall disposition. I first heard of the idea from Kaileen Elise and I never looked back. I created my “cloffice” at the end of 2020 and it has seen me through the good, the bad and the ugly.
While there are many things that contributed to a year of healing, having my own personal oasis to retreat to and to journal and meditate in has been a big factor. Read on to find areas of your home that can be transformed into your own personal sanctuary.
Closet
Transforming a closet into my office/meditation space was honestly one of the best things I’ve ever done for my mental heath. Creating a personal oasis in my own home was pivotal to keeping me sane and giving me an area to practice my meditation and journaling.
The above closet used to be filled with craft supplies and random junk I never used. Once I got honest with myself about what all that clutter was taking away from me, I got rid of 90% if it to create this beautiful space.
Take stock of the closets in your house and see if there’s one that you could declutter and transform into your own cloffice. My closet is about 50 square feet but you could easily get away with using one that is half that size. Use your imagination and see what you can find.
Spare Room or Office
If you have a spare room or office in your house that you don’t want to completely transform into your personal oasis, you can still work with this space. All you need to do is create a “personal oasis basket” that you can easily access when you want to use the room for yourself.
In your basket or under the bed tote, store the things you might want to use but don’t always want out in the open. A journal, candles, yoga mat, books, affirmation cards, etc. are all good places to start. Having them tucked away but easily accessible is the perfect way to transform this space whenever you have time.
You’ll be amazed at how relaxing it can be to have this space available to you when you need it. Pulling out your things, locking the door and meditating, journaling or just resting will do so much for your mental health.
Basement
Basements, even if they are unfinished, can be a great place to create your personal oasis. If your basement is unfinished, look around for an area that gets the most light and see if you can declutter some items and carve out an area for yourself.
Once you’ve carved out the area for yourself, it’s time to set it up for success. Look around your house for some items you might not be using; a small rug, a lamp and maybe a small table. Consider purchasing a folding screen to really separate the space.
Once you have your space selected and cleared, your options are endless with what you can do with it. Personally, I love using a giant bean bag to relax on and meditate in.
Back Porch
Depending on where you live, a back porch or enclosed porch might make a great spot for your personal oasis. In our last apartment, we had an enclosed back porch that was functional for 8-9 months of the year. But I recently discovered how incredible space heaters can be and that would have probably made it functional year round.
If you have a space like this in your house but it’s filled with storage items, again I recommend decluttering the space so you can use it for something that will really revitalize you. Get rid of as much stuff as you can and sell the stuff you think has value, I promise you won’t regret it.
Once you’ve decluttered, choose the best spot for you area. Just like I suggested above, if you want to partition off just a section of your porch, grab some room screens. Then make the space yours. A rug, a comfy chair and a house plant can do wonders on a small budget. Use you imagination and see what you can create.
Bedroom
Last but not least, if you don’t have anywhere else to carve out a small nook in; use your bedroom. Adding a cozy chair, a side table with an oil diffuser and a comfy blanket can be a personal oasis in a pinch. As long as it feels like it’s all yours, that’s all that matters.
Consider adding some items that will bring your personality to the space. A cute gallery wall next to the chair or a funky rug can really make it feel like it’s your own private sanctuary.
Just Find The Space
Any home can sacrifice a nook to allow you to create your personal oasis. Be grateful for whatever size house you live in now and just get creative with your vision. There’s nothing a few accent pieces and a room divider can’t solve.
Ultimately, you just need to create a space that you love being in and fosters a consitent self care journey, whatever that looks like for you. Heck you could even turn your car into a personal oasis if you really needed to. Make this year the year you prioritize yourself.
